"The
Jesuit President of Catholic Charities: 'The Church's Voice in American
Culture'"
On
two afternoons during every year-once in the fall, once in the winter--Jesuits
of the Chicago Province gather in Chicago and Cincinnati to listen
to speakers on various topics related to the province's ministries,
to discuss and share ideas on these topics, and to renew friendship
with each other. These gatherings are called "Area Days."
On
two Saturday afternoons in February 2001, Chicago Province Jesuits
gathered in Cincinnati (February 17) and Chicago (February 24) to
hear Fred Kammer, S.J., speak on "The Church's Voice in American
Culture: Faith that Does Justice." After each talk, Fr. Kammer,
outgoing president of Catholic Charities USA, led a conversation
on the variety of ways in which the Church's voice is and can be
heard in American culture. Fr. Kammer, a member of the New Orleans
Province of the Society of Jesus, is an attorney and activist for
low-income families and needy people. He is the author of Doing
Faithjustice: An Introduction to Catholic Social Thought and Salted
with Fire: Spirituality for the Faithjustice Journey.
