State of the Patna Province
Introductory Talk by Fr. Provincial, Thomas Anthonysamy, S.J.
Our mission requires apostolic discernment. During my first eight
months of provincial, I have observed the following encouraging
signs: We are seeking how best to serve the poor, and what we do
in a realistic way. We are not satisfied, but seeking the best way,
with God’s grace. Our target groups, the poor, women, children
and neglected are benefiting from our efforts. In recent times,
we have seen a greater interest in support of others’ work
through networking. I am getting good reports about our schools,
and the non-formal apostolate, trying out new methods like technical
training and the National Open School. The main impression is that
each Jesuit is committed, working hard, and preserving in spite
of obstacles and frustrations.
There
are however, certain areas of concern: the implementation of our
Province Vision. We need a sharper consciousness of what to do,
and how to do it in concrete reality. Progress has been slow. We
need to improve the quality of community life: union of minds and
hearts, a grip on our psychological problems, and teamwork. Likewise,
we need great care for persons: health, updating, and especially
spiritual needs.
In
making future plans we have to consider our limited man-power. New
ventures have to be carefully evaluated, in a scientific way. This
involves training our men for the specific apostolates.
