Fr. Gene Nevins, SJ, to replace Fr. John Pennington, SJ, as director of Catholic chaplains at Cook County Hospital
Friday, June 07, 2002

Fr. Pennington with Cristina Frederick, Cherie Cordero, and Mark Vild at Cook County
Fr. John Pennington, SJ, will step down from his post as director of Catholic chaplains after seven years of service to the low-income patients of Cook County Hospital in Chicago. The Jesuits —with the help of current chaplains Frs. Mark Andrews, James Chambers, Ron Ferguson, Bob Finn, SJ, and their many predecessors— have gently provided pastoral care for thousands of patients, families and medical professionals at Cook County for the past 99 years. In recognition of Fr. Pennington’s years of service and the Jesuits’ unyielding commitment to the hospital John H. Stroger, Jr., President of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, proclaimed April 25, 2002, “Father Pennington Day” in all of Cook County.

Fr. Eugene Nevins, SJ, has been appointed the new director of catholic chaplains at Cook County Hospital. He is currently serving as a chaplain at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati and has previously worked as a chaplain at both Cook County Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Michigan.
