Milford Spiritual Center, the Jesuit retreat ministry serving the Greater Cincinnati area and beyond, is seeking candidates for the position of Executive Director

Annually Milford Spiritual Center touches the lives of nearly 7,000 people of all ages and backgrounds with an Ignatian experience through various programs. The Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership of the Center—strategic, operational, development, and ministries. The person who takes this position needs to be a leader who has passion for ministry work. Strong team leadership, marketing, program promotion, and development skills are necessary to enhance the growth of the Center’s ministry.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I. POSITION SUMMARY
The Executive Director provides leadership, direction, and supervision for all programs and activities of the Center and establishes appropriate systems and structures to enable the ministry to function effectively. The Executive Director is responsible to the Board of Trustees for providing this leadership through planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and evaluating all facets of the Center in the service of its mission and ministry.

II. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Establishes and maintains effective internal relationships with staff and external relationships with clientele, the church of Greater Cincinnati, and the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus.
2. Initiates and submits a plan to the Board to effectively control the utilization of financial resources for the Center including the annual operating and capital budgets; monitors expenditures and revenues for all cost centers.
3. Develops a plan to enhance the Center’s public image and oversees the personnel and resources to implement that plan.
4. Oversees the work of the development director and collaborates with that person in the design and implementation of a development plan for the Center.
5. Determines appropriate staffing levels, interviews and hires qualified management staff, establishes and monitors formal means of accountability from staff, directs and delegates daily activities and evaluates staff performance to assure the effective and efficient operation of the Center.
6. Leads the strategic planning process including the development of the vision and goals for the Center. Collaborates with the staff and Board to implement the strategies of the plan.
7. Initiates and maintains methods to monitor and improve the quality and effectiveness of programs.
8. Assess the need for new programs or the need for programs of new clientele.
9. Leads the marketing and promotional work to enhance the image of the Center and growth in the attendance of the Center’s programs and use of its facilities.
10. Ensures that staff, as well as those served by them, are treated with respect, dignity and compassion in accord with the mission and core values of the Center.
11. Promotes the continuing education and development of the Center’s staff, including particular care for the Center’s Jesuit identity and mission.
12. Collaborates with other Cincinnati Jesuit works for mutual benefit.
13. Represents the Center in interfacing with Jesuit and other regional and national retreat ministries and networks.

III. QUALIFICATONS
A. Religious status: Appropriately qualified for public leadership in a work of the Catholic Church and the Society of Jesus.
B. Education: Master’s degree with a major in theology, spirituality, religious education or related area. Formal training in management/leadership is highly desirable.
C. Experience: At least five years broad based experience in successful leadership/managerial positions. Experience in religious organizations and/or retreat ministry is highly desirable.
D. Pursues an established program of spiritual growth, including regular retreats and spiritual direction.

IV. MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
A. Knowledge
1. Working knowledge of the Spiritual Exercises.
2. Good understanding and application of problem solving techniques
B. Abilities
1. To identify with the mission and ministry of the Society of Jesus.
2. To effectively communicate the vision of the Center to various stakeholders.
3. To assist staff to develop their potential and maximize their contribution in fulfilling the goals of the Center.
4. To work collaboratively with lay men and women and Jesuits as peers.

V. REPORTING RELATIONSHIP AND PROGRAM CARE
A. Reporting Relationship
1. Responsible to the Board for maintaining the Center’s ministry goals and for implementing its policies in a manner that enhances its Jesuit identity.
2. Responsible to the Jesuit Provincial as Director of a Work of the Society of Jesus.
3. Positions reporting directly to the Executive Director include:
4 Administrative Assistant
5 Development Director
6 Program Coordinators
7 Maintenance person
8 Program Scope: Accountable for staff of approximately ten full time and nine part time employees and an annual operating budget of a million dollars.


The ideal candidate is a man or woman, Jesuit or lay,
• whose life and actions are informed by a personal familiarity with and commitment to Jesus Christ,
• who is active in the community and ministry of the Catholic Church,
• who is experienced in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola,
• whose background includes familiarity with the mission and works of the Jesuits,
• who brings substantial successful experience in leadership and management,
• who is flexible in dealing with changing needs, demographics, and programs,
• who demonstrates established team building expertise, and
• who can advocate strongly and effectively an institution and its programs.
