George Lane gave the keynote address on December 1 to the Illinois
State Historical Society banquet at the Governor’s Mansion
in Springfield, Illinois. The topic was “The Miracle on Roosevelt
Road,” recounting the rescue and restoration of Holy Family
Church, the original Jesuit Church in Chicago, built by Father Arnold
Damen in 1857. The church is now fully restored and fully functional,
located at the center of a huge new residential development on the
Near West Side of Chicago. The Holy Family Preservation Society
raised $5 million over the past sixteen years with the motto, “Say
prayers and Send money.”
