New
General Counsellor and Regional Assistant for the United States,
and new Secretary of the Society appointed by Fr. Peter Hans-Kolvenbach.
August
19, 2005
Dear Fathers
and Brothers,
The Peace of Christ
In accordance with the Decree of GC 34 on Father General's Assistants
and Counsellors (d. 23, E, III, n.3), having heard the opinion of
the
Provincials of the Assistancy, and after consulting the General
Counsellors, I have decided to name Fr. James E. Grummer (WIS) as
Regional Assistant for the United States, which office carries with
it
also the role of General Counsellor. Fr. Grummer has served as
Provincial of Wisconsin since 2001. He will succeed Fr. Francis
E.
Case. This appointment will become effective on 1 October 2005.
After giving the matter careful consideration in the Lord and after
consultation, I have also decided to appoint Fr. Francis E. Case
as
Secretary of the Society. He will succeed Fr. Gabriel Codina, who
has
served in this position since 2001. This appointment will become
effective on 15 November 2005. When Fr. Case takes over as Secretary
of the Society, he ceases his role as Assistant ad providentiam
(CN
374, §2). A new Assistant a d providentiam will be named in
due course
(CN 376).
I sincerely thank Fr. Grummer for his availability to serve as a
new
General Counsellor and Regional Assistant. I also wish to express
to
Fr. Case my profound gratitude for his invaluable work on behalf
of
his Assistancy and of the whole Society. After fifteen years serving
as Assistant, the last ten years of which as General Counsellor
and
Assistant ad providentiam, he has generously agreed to accept this
new
appointment. I wholeheartedly want to thank as well Fr. Codina for
his
dedication and his reliable work as Secretary of the Society,
subsequent to serving for five years as Secretary for Education.
I
feel really sorry that for serious health reasons he has to interrupt
his much appreciated mission in the Curia at the service of the
universal body of the Society. Our prayers are with him when he
returns to Bolivia, his Province.
Fraternally yours in the Lord,
Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J.
Superior General
