Fr. General Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, SJ to Retire
March 3, 2006
The head of the Jesuit order Fr. General Peter-Hans Kolvenbach has received permission from Pope Benedict XVI to resign. In order to elect a new leader Fr. General has called a General Congregation. Each province will meet in the upcoming months to select a delegate to be sent to the General Congregation. The delegates will convene in early 2008 in Rome to elect the 29th successor to St. Ignatius. The Society of Jesus does not hold the general congregation regularly, it is only convened to elect a new superior or to discuss issues that can't be resolved. The last general congregation was held in 1995, Fr. General Peter-Hans Kolvenbach has served as the leader of the Jesuit order since 1983.
