General Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, SJ to Retire

The
head of the Jesuit order Fr. General Peter-Hans Kolvenbach has received
permission from Pope Benedict XVI to resign. In order to elect a
new leader Fr. General has called a General Congregation. Each province
will meet in the upcoming months to select a delegate to be sent
to the General Congregation. The delegates will convene in early
2008 in Rome to elect the 29th successor to St. Ignatius. The Society
of Jesus does not hold the general congregation regularly, it is
only convened to elect a new superior or to discuss issues that
can't be resolved. The last general congregation was held in 1995,
Fr. General Peter-Hans Kolvenbach has served as the leader of the
Jesuit order since 1983.
