An address by Fr. Edward W. Schmidt, SJ, provincial of the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus, to delegates of the Chicago Province Congregation

In early January 2007, 55 Jesuits who have been elected or appointed to serve as delegates to the Chicago Province Congregation met in Chicago. The purpose of the regional congregation was to elect a delegate who will travel to Rome in early 2008 for the 35th General Congregation of the worldwide Society of Jesus, which will elect a new Superior General and discuss seminal issues of concern to the Society. After celebrating the opening liturgy, Fr. Provincial Edward W. Schmidt, SJ, delivered a State of the Province Address that offered a status report on the health of the province and highlighted key concerns and challenges facing the province in the years ahead.
